Overall, good enjoyable, easy to read, lots of good chuckles. Rachel is already a riot, and Gene hitting on Caroline was so corny and old, but still made me laugh. should be interesting to see this next-gen team, but I actually hope you don't put too much focus on their being in the shadows of the old team, or being so much like their parents-- i know it's the Legacy earth, but I think these guys deserve to shine on their own, and TOO much legacy would make that a little hard. Only a couple complaints-- first, i think the group as a whole turned their minds around too quickly in the beginning. If they had been on the fence, then I think the little speech would have worked better, but for all of them to have been adamantly against it and then just go along was a bit unrealistic. Second, I have a thing against censored swearing like that. It would have been so easy to just say "Arsenal cursed loudly", and to have the %$@ thrown in there just pulled me out of the story. I admit this is a personal peeve, but i think it's worth taking into account As a whole though, lots of fun, and I'll be back. 4 stars!

Thank you, kind sir. Corny was part of what I was going for with Gene and Caroline, and i'm glad you enjoyed it. As far as the Legacy aspect goes, I won't be going for that intentionally. That is the theme for all of the E2 series and i'm hoping this will be unique from that. Yeah, that's the problem with reluctant characters in origin stories. I'm sorry I couldn't have done it better. And, frankly, I prefer censored swearing to "_______ cursed". To each his own. Thank you. Your feedback is very much appreciated. I'd love to hear from you again next time. -UDC

I read this a while ago and already let you know what I thought about this new title. But here I go again, to let everyone else know I liked it a lot. Gene turned out to be a great character I hope to see a lot more of. The first scene ( I totally agree with Sam here) seemed a little bit forced and the team changed their minds too fast for being absolutely against working together at first. But I like the team you created and I love the story that's going to come in the next few issues (yeah, I already read them ;D ) I look forward to the next issues. 4 stars Jina, that cover is awesome. I hope you stay on this title for a looooooooooong time

Welcome to the E2 family, UDC! And as you have commented on so many of my issues in the past, it is a pleasure to read your DC2/3 debut and give you feedback!
This was a strong debut, and a welcome addition to the legacy Earth we are building. The stand-out characters for me are Rachel (great characterization) and Sarin (though he's a bit more Namor than Aquaman at this point). But I thought everyone was given a distinctive voice.
So Checkmate is HQ'd at Belle Reve, huh? Interesting choice. I wonder if this ties into the scene at Bell Reve from JLL #1...? The Outsiders as a splinter group of Checkmate with a "who watches the watchmen?" mission is an interesting twist.
What I really liked about this issue is that it builds on the bigger story that Riz is developing in the other E2 titles. There is a shadowy conspiracy behind-the-scenes only glimpsed at here, and I look forward to seeing how that plays out in future issues. Who is Caroline Kelly, and how do the Outsiders figure into Checkmate's plans?
(BTW, is Caroline Kelly, Carrie Kelly of DKR fame?)
Loved the cover, Jina! Its dark, gritty style perfectly suits the nature of this book.
All around a fun, breezy read!

I read this a while ago and already let you know what I thought about this new title. But here I go again, to let everyone else know You did? Why was I not informed of this?! Yes, I too am a fan of Gene. He will show up more in future issues. Again, sorry about that. I'll do better in the future. I've heard before but it's still nice to hear again. Thank you. -UDC

Welcome to the E2 family, UDC! And as you have commented on so many of my issues in the past, it is a pleasure to read your DC2/3 debut and give you feedback! Thanks. It's good to be here. Thank you. The character's distinctive voices will be heard more in future issues, especially #2. Checkmate in Belle Reve was entirely Riz's idea. Long before I wrote page one, we bounced around ideas for the series and he suggested that's where we put HQ. Conspiracy? I have no idea what you're talking about... Seriously, I don't. Don't ask me about it. Yep. She always shows up in some fanfic. I figured I was following a trend. Yes, the cover is amazing, isn't it? Thanks for reading and commenting. It's very much appreciated. -UDC

Boy was I tickeled when I saw that you have taken up pen and paper (to coin a phrase) and started your own book. A book that has some outstanding potential! You've always been one of my biggest supporters over at DC2, and I promise to return the support in spades! Welcome to the trenches! I'm not going to say much about the first chapter since it has already been mentioned a couple of times. I will say that you did a great job making each character there own right from the very beginning. Tempest has thrown me a bit. Not what I'm used to, and I like it. Next to Ms. Dibney, he's probably the character that has intrigued me the most. In fact that whole scene between them, although brief, was my favorite. I'm a sucker for romance in books and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this is the start of a beautiful friendship. I can't wait to see what Checkmate has in store for this band of heroes. Putting Lian in as Arsenal as well as a Black Knight was another stroke of creative genius. She obviously has her father's skills, but I am curious on if her mother is the same as DC proper, and if so, how much of her mother is inside of her? Great cover, by the way. Excellent way to start a series and I am waiting anxiously for the second issue!

You've always been one of my biggest supporters over at DC2, and I promise to return the support in spades! Welcome to the trenches! Again, thank you for the welcome. With so many of these coming i'm half-expecting a gift basket. My, isn't Rachel the popular one? Well don't you worry, she'll get more screen time...er, page time in the future. And as for the "romance"...I won't say anything. Roy Harper has been one of my favorite characters for a long time, as well as his daughter. I always thought Lian would have a future in the "family business" and working for Checkmate seemed in the realm of possibilities. As far as her mother goes, I have no immediate plans but the door is always open. As am I. Thank you for your feedback. -UDC
